New Years Eve - 2016

Happy New Years Eve,

We just returned home from visiting my 93 (soon to be 94) year old mother whom we love deeply. We are so thankful that we had the opportunity to spend a couple of hours with her, and share a bit of New Years cheer, even if it was 4:00 in the afternoon... champagne is good at virtually any time of the day with the one's that you love.

So here we are, just hours away from the New Year, where did 2015 go?   It seems like just yesterday that I was giving my notice to JP Morgan, but yet it was almost 2 years ago now.  Like everyone, we've had our ups and downs over the past year, but on balance we wouldn't trade it for the world.

We'd just like to take a moment and pause, in a world that seems somewhat out of control and broken in many respects to thank each and every one of you that has supported us over the past year.  Sales aside, your friendships and words of support and encouragement are worth far more than the almighty dollar could ever provide.

For those of you that I have managed to offend over the past year or two, or five, or eight.... please accept my sincerest apologies.  I wish that I could find a way to simply click the reset button, but sadly there aren't a great deal of those types of reset buttons in real life, so all I can do is say I'm sorry and I'll try to do better.

So what does 2016 hold?  I have absolutely no idea, I wish I did.  There are however a few things that I've learned, and intend to fully incorporate into 2016, the 1st of which is...

Words matter.  Especially when attempting to communicate through email or conversations.  I'm notorious for wearing my shirt on my sleeve, both good and bad.  If I enjoy your company, I'll be the first to say I love you.  Alternatively, and I'll admit it, I'm not very good at communicating when times are tough... call this improved communication effort,  my 2016 New Years resolution.

So, lets talk a little about custom orders,  I'm not quite sure how it will all work from a practical standpoint, but here's what I'm thinking this 12/31/15.  Every stick that I make requires "X" number of hours to make.  Friday Night Sales are fun, and everyone loves a sale, myself included.  That said however, it still took me "X" number of hours to make the given stick.  I'm thinking my focus this New Year may be more on the custom side, as me guessing what you want has proven to be "iffy" at best. The list has in the past gotten rather long, but I think I'm at a point (or am hopeful that I can be at that point) where I can actually manage a custom list with a reasonable turn around time.  In the meantime, here's wishing you a safe and Happy New Year,

We Love you,

Doug & Erin

New Years Day / Friday Night Sale

It's getting to be that time again, things are slow so we're going to kick off the New Year right!

Good Luck! (Please check your own individual time zone to make sure the start time aligns with 1:00 PM Central Standard Time in the United States.)

Custom Time

Good Afternoon,

I've got all kinds of space on the board if anyone is interested in a custom.

As a reminder, here are the rules of the "Custom Time" game.

  • Existing design only, no "create it from scratch" designs.  Ebony is available, however it cannot be engraved.  An example of what will work would be a full body paua with banded borders.  In this example, the paua is being engraved, not the ebony, and the banded borders I cut by hand.
  • The only information needed is a link to the sold or active stick, along with allowable changes which are wood type, gemstone / metal/metal flake inlays and length.  If it requires more information than what's listed above, it's considered a "create it from scratch" design.  However, combining various elements of existing designs is fine.
  • In order to save on shipping charges, I'll accept a maximum of 2 orders per customer, and the first 5 to reply thru ETSY conversations will get the customs.
Update:
Shajolley, you've got the 1st spot!
Terrimc36, you've got the 2nd spot!
Herrbstststurrrm, you've got the 3rd spot!

Fridays - Our favorite day of the week

Good Morning All,

I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the holiday season, Santa's not far away.

I want to apologize for the abrupt cloaking of the blog for the past week, we had a few unanticipated distractions, but it's all good.  As you can see, you haven't missed anything.

So, this is our favorite day of the week, we have our Friday night get together with friends, I get to raise my head above ground level for a few hours.  Before the get together this evening however, I get to raise my a head a little higher, as in 2 stories higher.  There's an elderly gentleman (89 years old) who is a member of our Church, and I work with the "Helping Hands" committee.  He's a sweet old guy who just needs some help, and today myself and one of our Pastors are going to go clean his gutters.  For those of you that haven't had the distinct privilege of cleaning gutters, it's a nasty job, especially on a 2 story house.  We live in a 1 story house, and I paid someone to clean ours, so what's wrong with this picture :)  Afterwards it's off to visit my 93 year old mother who lives in skilled nursing, and then we go drink a few beers with our friends.  Suffice it to say, we're not going to be kicking out many sticks today, and hopefully neither I nor our Pastor will fall off the ladder, as that probably wouldn't be a good thing.

Let's talk about customs.  I've had a number of conversations this past week, and have taken quite a few custom orders, and I'm backed up a little bit.  For the time being, I'm not accepting new customs until I've tackled the internal list we've been keeping.  I should have the list cleared sometime next week.  For those of you that I've spoken to, thank you for your kind and encouraging words, and I meant what I said as it relates to your custom orders.

I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable weekend, I'll be back next week with an update on future custom orders.

Doug

December 3rd Customs

Good Morning,

Hope everyone is doing well, Erin just reminded me that today is my birthday, so Happy Birthday to me.  We seem to be in a bit of a slump lately with slow sales and few custom orders.  While I'm certainly not a market analyst, I suspect it's due to Black Friday / Cyber Monday along with all of the other big box retailers trying to move their stuff.  Well, just like them, we need to move our stuff also, as we've got bills to pay just like everyone else.  So, I'm going to tweak the custom guidelines a bit.  Until further notice, I'm removing the 30 day time limit on customs, if I just finished a custom for you and you want another one, send me a note.

Also, as it relates to current inventory, we'll be clearance pricing everything tomorrow around 1:00 PM. Similar in nature to a FNS without removing any inventory in the morning for price adjustments.

I have 3 open spots on the board if anyone would like to place a custom order.  The first 3 requests through ETSY conversations will get the custom orders.

As a reminder, here are the rules of the "Custom Time" game.

  • Existing design only, no "create it from scratch" designs.  Ebony is not available.
  • The only information needed is a link to the sold or active stick, along with allowable changes which are wood type, gemstone / metal/metal flake inlays and length.  If it requires more information than what's listed above, it's considered a "create it from scratch" design.

Friday Afternoon Sale

Good Morning,

I know it's late notice, in fact too late to officially announce a Friday Night Sale, as we prefer to announce FNS's on the preceding Wednesday.  All of that said, if anyone is interested, we will be marking existing inventory down the usual 20-25%, beginning at 1:00 PM this afternoon.

There is nothing wrong with any of the sticks from a craftsmanship standpoint, we just need to move older inventory.

Thanks for checking in, I'll probably be announcing a custom time opening tomorrow.

Have a great weekend!

World Champions!

Good Morning,

As if being a self employed hairstick maker isn't challenging enough, it's particularly difficult when your hometown team wins the World Series!  Now I need to change the stick below and remove ALDS and ALCS Champions to World Champions.  Definitely a first world problem.

I made this stick the morning after we locked down the ALCS and we had it posted briefly, and then decided to give it to our organist at Church.  She has been sporting all kinds of hair toys over the years and we finally decided that she needs a TT, so what better time than when we're getting ready to go to the World Series.

The late nights and all of the hype has definitely impaired production lately.  While we didn't attend and opted to watch it on TV, the parade in KC yesterday was unbelievable with almost 1 million people in attendance.  We had a late afternoon lunch yesterday with friends and the city was a sea of blue.  Exhaustion finally caught up with me and I was in bed last night at 6:30 pm, and I just got up 45 minutes ago, I can't remember the last time I slept for almost 10 hours.

Being well rested and now looking at a board with 3 open spots, it can mean only one thing... it's Custom Time!

As a reminder, here are the rules of the "Custom Time" game.

  • Existing designs only, no "create it from scratch" designs.  Ebony is not available.
  • The only information needed is a link to the sold or active stick, along with allowable changes which are wood type, gemstone / metal/metal flake inlays and length.  If it requires more information than what's listed above, it's considered a "create it from scratch" design.
  • Just one order, and the first three to reply thru an ETSY conversation get the custom orders.
  • You are only eligible to win once in a 30 day time frame, and the custom order is non-transferable.

    Update:
    Congrats:

Franzisakazenwadel, you've got the 1st spot!
Allthatglimmersgold, you've got the 2nd spot
Rondragon, you've got the 3rd spot
This custom game is over for the day.

    Thanks for visiting.

Good Morning,

Another great night last night with old friends and new acquaintances.  Plus, our Royals won the 1st game of the A.L.C.S. with game 2 this afternoon.  I've got one custom that I'm just now finishing along with a holly vine and blackwood ghost right behind them.

We seem to have inventory, so I'm going to wrap up these three and then I'm on to some additional custom work.  It's been a while since I've mentioned "the board", and yes there are 3 open spots, so let's get them filled up.  I'll take 3 custom orders today with my only request being, please keep them simple, existing designs only, no mix-matching of various designs or anything requiring me to create new artwork.

  • Just one order, and the 1st three to reply thru an ETSY conversation get the custom spots.
  • You are only eligible to win once in a 30 day time frame, and the custom order is non-transferable.
Have a Great Saturday!

Congrats:

Willowyn, you've got the 1st spot!

Laylaala, you've got the 2nd spot!

JoGamba, you've got the 3rd spot!

A Little Past with the New

Good Evening,

So for any of you that have actually been following this blog, at last count I think it was a sum total of 6... but hey, I'm the consummate optimist, the glass is half full, I'm thinking I can only go one direction, or I may be Friday Night delusional.

Tonight was another mini reunion night at the Tavern, so for  those of you that have zero interest in our social life, this is the time to look for something else on the world-wide web.

First, Steve and Ann, you were missed.

Neil - You're my bud, sorry you're going thru the discomfort, I hope you feel better.
Karen - Welcome aboard, G.C.!
Deb and Keith - Glad to finally have the opportunity to chat a little.
Jody - You're the man, I have no earthly idea how to begin to comprehend the associated issues with the internal combustion engine.
Dave - We have much to discuss.
Sam - I'm going to tune in tomorrow, I had no clue, and I'm looking forward to hearing your voice.

And finally,

Gina... How in the world do you do what you do?  I get the whole recruiting thing, it's a stroke of genius!  Honestly, I have no clue how you pull off your magic.

OK, so if I missed anyone, I'm sorry.  In any event, we got home after our mini reunion and Erin asked if I could replace the metal part of the wine stopper I made years ago, back when we first started TT in 2006.  I've tucked the metal parts away somewhere in one of my shops, but this is what I did find, Erin now has a new wine bottle stopper!  Signed and dated sometime in 2007.... we just love our Friday Nights!

Have a Great Weekend!

Early Friday Morning Custom

Good Morning,

Thunder woke me up this morning around 2:30, and I've got machinery to protect (unplug).  So today is going to be a long one.  Let's do a custom!

On another note, remember a few weeks back when the holly rumor spread like wild fire, which I subsequently squashed?  Well, this time it's true.  I purchased premium grade holly yesterday, let's just hope it actually is premium and not spalted, it should be here next week.

As a reminder, here are the rules of the "Custom Time" game.
  • Existing design only, no "create it from scratch" designs.  Ebony and Holly are not available.
  • The only information needed is a link to the sold or active stick, along with allowable changes which are wood type, gemstone / metal/metal flake inlays and length.  If it requires more information than what's listed above, it's considered a "create it from scratch" design.
  • Just one order, and the 1st to reply thru an ETSY conversation gets the custom.
  • You are only eligible to win once in a 30 day time frame, and the custom order is non-transferable.
Update:

Icy Cascade, you've won the custom!

Since it's going to be a long day, CaileyJH, you've also won a custom!

The game is closed, I'll probably post another one over the weekend sometime.

Labor Day Games

Good Evening,

OK, the Labor Day games and TT are closed.  We had 2 custom orders and only one participant in the "Where's the Bottom" game.  For those interested, the bottom was $154, roughly a 22% discount.  The purple one was never captured, I took the price down to $125, a 35% discount.  So, it looks like we've got a loser on our hands, but that's ok... Christmas is coming and my sweet Madeline (grand-niece) likes my left overs.  As far as I'm concerned, if it's not going to sell, I'd rather it not sell at it's retail price... the alternative is it not selling at a discounted price, and that just hurts my feelings.    :)

Have a Great Labor Day Night, and there's a rumor that Ivy whispered / licked into my ear... there might be a "Surprise Custom" tomorrow!

__________________________________________________________________________

Sorry about the time, I got busy and forgot... that kind of thing happens at my advanced age.

___________________________________________________________________________

Happy Labor Day!

While my mind is still lingering in 1975 from the reunion, it's time to get back to work.  So, let's play some games, it's a double header game day.

Where's the Bottom?

If you haven't participated in this fabulous game in the past, here's how it works.  We've got 2 aged  sticks in inventory (aged to the extent that they are less than 1 week old), pictured below, and they've gotta go.  Each stick is currently priced at $195.  Beginning at 1:00 PM, US, (CST), I'm going to start playing with the prices, they'll go down, they might go up, they'll go down again... you get the idea.  I'll be adjusting the prices about every 5 minutes until someone bites.  At that point, we've found the bottom!

So, the Where's the Bottom game starts at 1:00, but Custom Time starts now.  I've got 2 open spots on the board, would anyone like to play?

As a reminder, here are the rules of the Custom Time game.
  • Just one order, and the first 2 people to reply thru an ETSY conversation gets the customs.
  • You are only eligible to win once in a 30 day time frame, and the custom order is non-transferable.

Have a Great Labor Day!

Update:

Congrats Mortmain, you've got the 1st one!

and this concludes today Custom Time game... Lauren you've got the 2nd spot.

Big Weekend

Good Morning,

Today's posting is dedicated to my old friends, we'll get back to the business of Timberstone Turnings tomorrow.

It's been a few days since I last checked in, and there's a good reason for it.  This weekend was my 40th year high school reunion, wow... what a flood of memories and emotions.  The vast majority of the folks I've re-connected with are people that sadly I haven't thought too much about since the day I walked out of Shawnee Mission South High School.  The "In Memoriam" video quite literally brought me to tears, Steve you did an outstanding job.  While I've been on Facebook now for a number of years, up until last Wednesday you could count the number of posts I've made on one hand, as I've never really embraced the medium, I thought it was largely a waste of time.  Now, I keep an open tab on the laptop for Facebook along with the other 10 or so tabs that are open every day, and I've actually been sending out "Friend Requests".  I certainly didn't see this coming.

So, a brief note to any of my old Raider friends that might be reading this, these past few days have been quite melancholy for me but at the same time, it's been a very meaningful experience.  While it took more brain cells than I thought I had, (Lord knows I've killed enough over the years), I was eventually able to begin putting the faces back in perspective, and it's a good thing.  Scott, Dave, Ann, Kelly and to all of the other committee members, here's a big Thank You for what you did... you guys Rock!  To everyone else that I saw, and to those that I saw but didn't recognize, please, let's not let another 40 years go by, heck, based on the way we use to play, I'll be lucky to make it another 10!

I truly miss you all and wish you only the best in the days and years to come.  Finally, thank you to everyone I knew in High School, you're part of my DNA and each of you contributed in your own way to who I am today.

_______________________________________________________________________________

OK, so now back to the present.  We still have these 2 sticks in inventory which because of the reunion I haven't done any pricing adjustments.  I needed something to show my old friends, because whenever I tell anyone what I do, it's a universal "deer in the headlights look", as in "You do  What"?   Let's face it ladies, this is truly a niche market, one that not many people have an appreciation for, but fortunately you do.  Watch for my announcement tomorrow, I'm thinking that we may be playing a game, plus I've got a few open spots on the board.

Have a great Sunday, and thanks for allowing me to share my experience.

Wednesday Evening

Good Evening,

I just looked at LHC, and I apologize if we've somehow indicated that Holly is available.

All we have in stock, and I don't have a great deal of it is spalted holly.  I've been searching for premium holly now for well over a year, to no avail.  The spalted holly that we have in stock was a purchase I made several years ago that was presented online as pure white holly... it wasn't, it was spalted, I was bait and switched and paid a premium.  For this reason, I don't purchase woods online, other than from trusted sources.  My preference is, and always has been to purchase all varieties of woods locally where I can examine the wood, prior to purchase.

Again, sorry if there was any confusion.

Wednesday Morning Custom Time

Sunday Afternoon

Good Afternoon,

What a fantastic day in Kansas City, we're talking southern California nice.  70 degrees, zero humidity and not a cloud in the sky, it seems like we get maybe 4 or 5 of these kind of days per year.  Well, that meant only one thing, a Harley ride to Lawrence (home of the KU Jayhawks), for lunch with plenty of back road sights and smells.  135 miles of pure bliss, and Ivy had her picture taken on the back of the Harley no less than 100 times... she just makes people smile with her hair whipping in the wind.

So, we get back home only to discover the same 4 sticks in inventory that we had when I woke up this morning... that's just wrong on so many levels and it needs to be resolved.  As most of you know, I don't like looking at inventory.

I had to actually do a little ETSY studying, something I really don't like doing... the studying part that is.  I learned how to create a "Coupon Code", and I named it "TTGET15".

I'm announcing it only on the blog, no where else... why you ask, because I can.  As far as I'm concerned, if you're going to the effort of looking at this, you might as well be the beneficiaries.  If there's a stick currently in inventory that you like, enter the coupon code at checkout and you'll automatically receive a 15% discount (at least that's what it's suppose to do, and if it doesn't we'll fix it so you get the discount).

It's 5:15 PM my time, and I suspect I'll be ready for bed around 8:30... pretty exciting guy huh?  When I'm shutting the computer down for the night, that's when the sale ends.  So, if you've been on the fence, now's the time, there's no telling when we'll have another sale.

Have a Great Night!

Update:

I'm not going to make it to 8:30, I'm sunburned and tired... the code remains until tomorrow.

Goodnight, I'm whipped!

Update:  Monday Morning

The coupon code has expired, there is no longer a discount.

Where's the Bottom?

Good Afternoon,

Let's play a game, it's been a while.  It's roughly 2:00  PM (CST) my time, and I'm thinking we start a fabulous new game of "Where's the Bottom" game at 6:00 PM.

It's $175 right now, and beginning at 6:00 I'm going to begin reducing the price every 15-20 minutes until we find the bottom.

Good Luck, so who's going to get today's steal?

Have a great Afternoon!

Oh, what the heck, let's do this one also, it'll save us doing a FNS.

And, just because I can... an added twist!   The prices may not just go down, I might raise the price every now and then just to keep you on your toes.

Oh, what the hell...

Update 7:10 PM

Last call Ladies, prices go back up in 15 minutes.

Custom Time

Good Afternoon,

We didn't have any takers this morning, so let's try again... anyone up for a custom?

TT Update

Good Morning,

Early on when I started the blog I had mentioned that there was a story behind the laser.  So, for  those of you that remember Paul Harvey, here's the rest of the story.

Some of you may recall that back in January I had ordered a new laser because my old laser was hit or miss at best, plus it wasn't powerful enough to engrave ebony.  From a pricing standpoint, consider the cost of a new laser the equivalent of a new mid sized vehicle, they're not cheap.

Fast forward to March, the big day came, packaged in a box the size of a smart car (literally, I know this because Erin drives a smart car and it replaced her car in the garage, and it weighed in at about 200 pounds).  The rep and I spent 2 days setting it up and training and life was good, finally.

Now, fast forward 3 whole days, and the new laser has stopped working.  Clearly a case of operator error, right?  Well, of course the rep had a schedule, and he couldn't get back to KC for additional training for 2 weeks, so now we're into April.

The rep visited again, and to his surprise he couldn't get it to work either, so he assumed we had a bad mother board, and ordered a new one.  Don't worry he said, it's a simple installation,  and he was off again.

Well, most things should be simple for someone that's been doing it for 20 years... not someone who has owned it now, inoperably for 3 weeks.  So another 2 weeks go by and he comes back to install the mother board, something that I couldn't have figured out how to do in a lifetime.

He finally get's the new mother board installed, and you guessed it... it still didn't work.  OK, OK, I've got it figured out now he said, we need a new rotary attachment, that'll fix the problem, so they sent me a new rotary.  Yep, you guessed it again, except now, it's not their problem... it's mine.  Clearly my computer isn't strong enough to run this powerful machine, so you need to buy a new computer and here are the spec's.  GULP, hey... what's another thousand dollars, I need this machine.  So now I've got the computer... and once again you guessed it.  Now HQ's technical support team determined that my new computer wasn't set up correctly, so I needed to send it to them for them for it to be configured correctly.  Of course they determined once they had it in hand that it had a bad port, so they replaced it... thus voiding the warranty and any chance of a return.

OK, so now we're into June.  Keep in mind that in order for all of this gloriousness to happen I had to pony up a $1,200 deposit in January, and my lease payments are $450 per month that I had to begin paying in February.  So, I'm not real happy about the situation, and trust me, I have a colorful vocabulary, and everyone learned that in short order.

I get the computer back, spend hours re-setting everything up... and it still didn't work, and now I don't even understand all the stuff they've done to the new computer, it's worthless to me at this point.  So now it's time bring in the experts, 2 tech support people fly to KC from Phoenix along with their trunkful of tools and diagnostic stuff, and spend 2 days taking the machine apart.  By 3:00 in the afternoon the 2nd day, I finally broke... pardon my French, but as the machine was sitting there in hundreds of parts, I told them to pack their shit up and get out of my house, I want my money back.

Apparently it wasn't a concept they were accustomed to, so I had to go to the top, and after a month of deliberation on their part,  I received my refund check last week, 7 months after it all started.  So this is my new laser story.

During all of this time however, I still had the old laser and just kept limping along.  Bear in mind, the old laser ruins at least 1/3rd of the sticks I make for one reason or another, up until 2 days ago when it died entirely.

So here I sit, out thousands of dollars, hundreds of hours wasted and laser-less.  I can drive it to Denver to get it fixed, it's roughly a 10 hour drive.  However at $200 per hour, with an estimated 3-4 days repair time, along with me sitting in a hotel for the duration, doesn't hold much appeal.  So what do I do?

I've begun initial research into a new laser company, but it's a long drawn out and expensive process, and sadly we're not independently wealthy, I have to earn a living now... like everyone else, we've got bills to pay.  I could just take the sticks to my old engraver as we did in the very beginning.  The problem there is that now I'm making sticks for free, as his engraving charges would eat up whatever profit there is on any given stick.  That's the reason we bought the 1st laser to begin with.

So here's what I'm going to do, as my options are quite limited at this point.  We're going back to the good old days of banded sticks.  The only other alternative is for me to brush up my resume, and that is absolutely the last thing I want to do.  That said however, by the same token I'm not going to ask Erin to live under a bridge with me.

So there you have it... "The rest of the story".

Later today I'll be announcing another "custom time".  Banded sticks are the only options.  If I get a request for an engraved stick, I'm simply going to provide a link to this posting.  Please don't think I'm trying to be a jerk by doing so, I just simply don't want to write this over and over again through ETSY conversations.  The simple truth is that I have a full platter right now in front of me, and lengthy conversations are not a priority.

For those that don't know what a "banded stick" looks like, here's one I did yesterday - https://www.etsy.com/transaction/1052409599

We truly apologize for the inconvenience but I hope you understand the pickle we're in.

Thanks
Doug
